FLOOD OF "RWGS" MEAN AVALANCHE OF SENATE ADS

Oberweis ran for the Republican senate nomination in 2002, spent close to $1 million, and got 259,515 votes (31.5 percent). Wood ran for governor in 2002, finishing third with 246,825 votes (26.9 percent), but she ran well in the northern suburbs. The early outlook: The Republican “establishment” candidate invariably prevails in primaries, as Jim Ryan proved in 2002, getting 44.7 percent; but there is a definite socially conservative vote (like O’Malley’s 28.4 percent in 2002), and a definite moderate/female gender vote (like Wood’s 26.9 percent in 2002). The hard-core, socially conservative candidates (McKenna, Cox, O’Malley, Rauschenberger) will split the Hard Right’s 30 percent. Full Article...

In a low-interest primary, Durbin, endorsed by Simon and the Democratic establishment, prevailed easily, with 512,520 votes (65 percent), to Quinn’s 233,138 (30 percent); the bulk of Quinn’s vote came from Chicago’s black wards.Full Article...

"ROAD MAP" UNFOLDS FOR LOCAL 2004 ELECTION

Brown won the 2000 Democratic primary with less than a majority, getting 216,631 votes (48.4 percent), but easily topping her three white opponents: Alderman Pat Levar, who got 123,309 votes (27.5 percent), Metropolitan Water Reclamation Commissioner Pat Young, who got 56,841 votes (12.8 percent), and Alderman Joe Moore, who got 50,665 votes (11.3 percent). 20th House District: For over 30 years, there has been a Non-Aggression Pact between the Republican McAuliffe Clan and the Democratic Cullerton Clan, initially in the 38th Ward and the old 14th House District, and later in the 41st Ward and the 13th and 14th House Districts. Capparelli backed Tom Needham, who came within 1,895 votes of beating young McAuliffe, and the Doherty-McAuliffe forces ran Peter Callaghan against Capparelli, who kept Capparelli’s winning percentage to just 58.5. D’Amico is the nephew of Alderman Marge Laurino (39th), and the grandson of the late Alderman Tony Laurino (39th). Full Article...
