VOTERS OPT FOR "POLITICAL DISTANCING," BUT IT WAS VERTICAL RATHER THAN HORIZONTAL

Voters did some serious and permanent “political distancing” on March 17. A number of veteran politicians along with some newcomers were not just self-quarantined. Instead, they were banished to that land of has-been politicians. Like about 6-feet underground. Those given the boot included John Garrido and Ira Silverstein for judge, Mike McAuliffe as 41st Ward Republican committeeman, Mark Kalish as state representative, Cary Capparelli for state representative, Frank Avila as Metropolitan Water Reclamation District commissioner, Mike Cabonargi for Clerk of Court and Bill Conway for state’s attorney. CORONAVIRUS CRISIS WILL MAKE OR BREAK TRUMP

The coronavirus pandemic gives President Donald Trump an opportunity to prove or disprove his competence. It could be his "Jimmy Carter Moment," when the president proved incapable of rescuing U.S. hostages in Iran, or an "LBJ Moment," when Lyndon Johnson proved incapable of getting U.S. troops out of Vietnam. Or, conversely, it could be a "Cuban Missile Crisis Moment" when John Kennedy barely averted nuclear annihilation. Or a "Berlin Wall Moment," when Ronald Reagan began to bring it down. Both presidents measured up to the moment. Full Article...

"HANDLE WITH CARE" IS KEY TO ART OF JUDGEMAKING

In order to be elected a judge in Cook County an aspiring lawyer must be well-handled, uncancelled, well-positioned and, if possible, have a hard floor. Although that could describe some other more amusing activity, it is incontrovertibly the essence of the art of judgemaking.
Lawyers are politically clueless, as is the general public and voting electorate. They have no idea how these supposedly magnificent, all-seeing, all-knowing creatures in black robes got on the bench and have the power to make decisions which affect people’s lives, liberty, wealth, economic security and future pursuit of happiness. There are 378 Circuit Court judges in Cook County, of which 138 are appointed (by the elected judges) as associate judges for 4-year terms, and the remaining 240 elected, with 155 from 15 subcircuits and 85 countywide, for6-year terms with a retention vote required. Cook County also elects three state Supreme Court justices, of which one is on the March 17 ballot, for a 10-year term, and 24 1st District Appellate Court justices, of which two are on the ballot this year, also for a 10-year term. There are ten Circuit Court vacancies. HERE ARE MY JUDICIAL PREDICTIONS. Full Article...
