LOCAL HISPANIC POLS PLAY "KING OF THE HILL"

Moore was unopposed in the 2000 Democratic primary. Inronically, the anti-HDO Soto ran against Granato for alderman in 1999, and lost by 360 votes; she then ran for state representative in 2000, was opposed by HDO, and won. Now she’s running against Flores, with HDO support. Solis is reportedly Daley’s favorite Hispanic alderman, but his position is not solid. Medrano is running against Solis for committeeman in 2004. 35th Ward (Democratic Committeeman): The HDO suffered a huge humiliation when challenger Rey Colon upset incumbent Alderman Vilma Colom by over 1,200 votes. "MADIGAN'S DOMINANCE MAKES GOP GLUM AND GLUMER

Bush carried the district with 53 percent in 2000, so it leans Republican. The outlook: Republican pickup. 108th District (Effingham): Veteran Democrat Chuck Hartke, first elected in 1984, was appointed state agriculture director. Bush won the district with over 60 percent, and Republican John Jones unseated 18-year state senator Bill O’Daniel (D) in 2002 by a 5,473-vote margin (53.6 percent). Expect a Republican pickup. 103rd District (Urbana): Madigan carefully redrew this district to cram it with students, and Democrat Naomi Jakobsson upset Republican incumbent Tom Berns by just 1,489 votes (52.9 percent). The outlook: The remap made the district more Republican. Leans Democrat. Full Article...

"TWO AGENDA" SPRINGFIELD LEAVES OUT REPUBLICANS

At present, the Democrats hold a 66-52 majority in the House, and a 33-26 majority in the Senate. Roughly a third of the white vote in Cook County consists of liberals, who rarely vote Republican. The Madigan-drawn map created five new majority-Democrat suburban districts, and two new Chicago-based Hispanic districts, at the expense of Republicans. Prior to 2002, the Republicans had a 32-27 Senate majority. If Welch retired, the seat would likely go Republican. LANG OPS OUT OF STATEWIDE MIX IN '06

Expect Dart to run for Cook County sheriff in 2006 if incumbent Mike Sheahan runs for county board president. In the 1988 Democratic primary, Lang faced attorney Ira Silverstein, and triumphed by just 267 votes. Silverstein and Moses both live in the 50th Ward, where the primary vote accounts for roughly 40 percent of Lang’s 16th District. Carroll lost that race to then-state Representative Jan Schakowsky, of Evanston. Sutker won Niles Township 7,410-4,852, but lost Evanston 2,542-7,724. Is the Sutker-Lang base in Niles Township eroding? Lang doesn’t think so. As for 2006, take Lang at his word. Full Article...
