SILVESTRI-MARTWICK
RACE WILL BE PARTY “BAROMETER”
“I’m
a Democrat,” said Rob Martwick, Silvestri’s opponent. “And
the 9th (District) is a Democratic district. By comparison,
Silvestri needs all of the “hard” Republicans (18,009), plus
another 27,000 “independent,” “swing,” or “hard”
Democratic votes. According to Martwick, Silvestri will be no
Dudycz. Silvestri scoffs at Martwick’s assertions. Martwick
said that he expects to win the 36th Ward by at least 60-40,
carry Norwood Park Township by 2-1, and carry the 45th Ward by
65-35; in the 41st Ward, John Malatesta is Bugielski’s
organizer, and Martwick expects that the
Blagojevich-Bugielski-Martwick slate will win the ward narrowly
over the McAuliffe-Silvestri team.
Silvestri is well-known and well-liked, but the 9th
District has a huge Democratic-voting base. full

ANOTHER
BIZARRE OUTCOME IN MWRD COMMISSIONER RACE
So
Sandoval got yanked. The suburban committeemen pushed a Meany-Santos-Sheehan
slate, and Sheehan ran third in the suburbs (111,552 for Meany,
99,032 for Santos, and 82,128 for Sheehan, with Avila fourth at
76,557). Notably,
in Alderman Dick Mell’s 33rd Ward (Mell is the father-in-law
of Democratic gubernatorial candidate Rod Blagojevich), Avila
ran a strong third, almost 1,650 votes ahead of Sheehan. In sum,
Avila won because Sandoval was not on the ballot. Expect Avila
the Younger to run.

“ROADBLOCK
STRATEGY” IS DALEY GOAL FOR 2003 RACE
By
next May, when Mayor Rich Daley’s current term expires, a
Daley will have been Chicago’s mayor for 35 of the previous 48
years. That white candidate could be Daley’s brother, Cook
County Commissioner John Daley, his other brother, Bill
Daley, or Cook County State’s Attorney Dick Devine – or
perhaps even former city school CEO Paul Vallas, who is
currently on the outs with Daley. The 2000 census pegged
Chicago’s population at 2,896,016, of which 31.3 percent were
white, 26 percent Hispanic, 36.4 percent black, 4.3 percent
Asian, and 2 percent classified as “other.” full

GUTIERREZ
PROVES HE’S CHICAGO’S “NUMERO UNO”
Gutierrez, age 48, is of Puerto Rican descent, and is a strong
ally of Mayor Rich Daley. Castro, who is Mexican-American, also
presumed that those of Mexican ancestry would vote for him over
the Puerto Rico-obsessed Gutierrez. Gutierrez is the
former 26th Ward alderman and Democratic committeeman. In the
Hispanic-majority precincts of the 33rd Ward, Gutierrez won by
3-1.
Even in Cicero, Gutierrez won by better than 6-1. In 2000, Gutierrez won the primary 35,593-7,663
over Joseph Pagan; in 1998, Gutierrez was unopposed, and got
32,349 votes; in 1996, Gutierrez had three foes (including
Holowinski), and got 27,140 votes (70.8 percent).
